Shrek The Musical

On Saturday evening I had a rare night without the babies (well for a good 2-3 hours anyway!) I’d bought tickets about 18 months ago for myself and my two goddaughters to see Shrek the Musical at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle.

We decided to go to Lola Jeans beforehand as it was so convenient for the theatre. We have been here before and really enjoyed the food. Most of us got the sharing platters which you can get for 1, 2, 3 or 4 people. I had the steak platter, Hubby got the beef platter and my goddaughters shared the pork platter which looked delicious. It was pretty busy despite being 5pm on a Saturday but a lot of people looked like they were finishing of a day’s shopping trip and being so close to the theatre must help too for pre-theatre dinner like us.

Very stylish interior

The food was a little slow to arrive and there was a delay on the chips which meant most of the chips arrived well into the meal. I had ordered sweet potato fries which never arrived. The staff were very apologetic though. The steak on the platters was cooked perfectly and the coleslaw and red onion marmalade was really tasty. The steak platters also came with pitta bread too which was a nice change.

Sadly we didn’t get to try dessert as we had to leave straight for the show at 7pm. Also looking around the cocktail looked really good. Some were served in tea cups and tea pots which looked interesting. Definitely somewhere to go back to without the kids. By the time we left it was packed with a lot of people standing at the bar for drinks only.

As for Shrek the Musical, it was great entertainment for the young ones. I enjoyed the second half a lot more than the first. The songs were good but by the time I got home I couldn’t have recalled any of them which for a musical says it all. I liked Donkey and Fiona and it was very much light hearted fun so we enjoyed our night. I would recommend if you have little ones that really like the film but it doesn’t come close to being as good as Matilda, which was just brilliant.

Still, lovely to have a night out with my beautiful goddaughters. I love being at the theatre anyway and just a night out of the house is a huge treat these days!
