Sensory Day

Tom’s first tea party

Had a busy day today. After dropping Ava off at nursery Tom and I had a date at Baby Sensory class. This is one of the best classes I did with my daughter so I couldn’t wait to get Tom signed up. It’s great to have some one to one time with my boy, as Ava takes up so much of my attention. It helps to ease my guilt of second child syndrome. I often feel that Tom doesn’t get anywhere near the attention from me and the rest of the family that Ava did at this age which worries me. But I only have to see the two of them together, the way Tom’s eyes follows Ava everywhere she goes, and the way she wants to kiss and cuddle him, albeit a little roughy, to know that whatever guilt I feel is worth it for the relationship I know they’ll have as they grow.

Baby Sensory is all about developing the senses from a very young age, so after our welcome song and some basic baby sign language we started with a baby tea party. Letting the babies explore the food and tea cups. Then we had a song and a tickling stick (aka a feather duster) to tickle their face, feet etc to help stimulate their sense of touch. Next up was more touch stimulation in the way of different textures of carpets and bath mats. Rough ones, spiky ones,  soft and fluffy ones and again more lovely music. The babies sense of smell was stimulated with a smell basket which had lots of different smelling objects. A lavender sack, some strawberry shower gel and a scented candle were some of the lovely smells the babies got to discover. Tom enjoyed smelling but they must have tickled his nose as he had a big sneeze. All the activities are so well thought through and the items are all very baby friendly & everything is spotless & cleaned after each session. Heidi the teacher explains the idea behind each exercise and the benefits they bring to the babies. Bubbles, lights and butterflies were also used and Tom just loved it all. I just love watching how he reacts to the different activities. This is definitely a class for any new mothers looking to have some quality bonding time with their little ones.
